It’s time for us to hear from our resident Financial Health Coach, Chris Folland. He’s offering an interesting perspective on the financial situation we may find ourselves in.

Over to Chris…

Hi – I’m starting off this new year with an important question for us – are you an economic slave

I know that for me, when I first started out, I was a criminal and civil litigator. I was supposed to work 9am-5pm, although it was more like 8am-7pm, if not longer.

I was supposed to work 5 days a week, however it was often at least 6 days a week.

It created a situation in which I was time poor, in that I had to spend those hours in the office to get paid, plus I was an economic slave. This is because by the time I’d used the money I earned on expenses, there actually wasn’t enough left over to invest.

Can you relate?

Once I was in my early 20s, I attended a professional development seminar where the speaker shared something subtle yet powerful.

He said, ‘I don’t work for money – money works for me’.

I immediately thought ‘wow, what does that mean?’

He doesn’t work for money; money works for him. 1

He decided that he wasn’t going to swap an hour for a dollar anymore and instead that he was going to figure out a way to use his money to increase his income through investment.

Ultimately, what he invested earned enough to cover his expenses, which made his money work for him.

And that’s financial freedom

When I decided to apply these principles in my own life, that’s when I stopped being an economic slave.

So, if you were taking the helicopter-view on your situation, are you an economic slave? If yes (or even if no) – is there anything you’d like to change?

Simply message me if you’d like to chat about what you might want to change, and remember to tune in for this week’s #AliveWithFi when we dive deeper on this one ☺

1 When it comes to finances, “you’ve got to learn better options so you can start making your money work for you.” It’s something that we can all learn, and making smart money decisions is what will help us work towards financial freedom.
